Third-ranked Iowa won the first five matches of the night to quiet a record crowd of 4,087 at Frost Arena Friday night, and went on to defeat 20th-ranked South Dakota State, 29-8, in wrestling dual action.
The Hawkeyes improved to 4-0 in duals this season, while SDSU fell to 1-2 in meeting its third consecutive nationally ranked opponent.
Iowa’s Brandon Sorensen, the second-ranked wrestler at 149 pounds opened the dual with a 9-5 decision over fellow returning NCAA qualifier Alex Kocer. After Kocer tied the match early in the third period with an escape and takedown, Sorensen countered with a reversal and two-point near-fall in the final minute to record the victory.
Each of the next three matches also went down to the wire, but the Hawkeyes came away with the victories. Seventh-ranked Michael Kemerer defeated Colin Holler, 7-3, at 157 pounds and Joey Gunther posted a 6-4 decision over Luke Zilverberg in the 165-pound weight class.
In what turned out to be the only match of the night between two wrestlers ranked in the top 20 by Intermat, sixth-ranked Alex Meyer of Iowa earned a 4-1 decision over 15th-ranked David Kocer.
The Hawkeyes’ seventh-ranked Sammy Brooks closed the first half of the dual with a 20-5 technical fall victory over Martin Mueller in the 184-pound division.
Thomas Gilman, the top-ranked wrestler at 125 pounds, also won by technical fall for the Hawkeyes, defeating Ben Gillette by a 26-11 count.
SDSU got on the board in the 197-pound weight class as fourth-ranked Nate Rotert posted a 9-5 victory over Cash Wilcke. Rotert trailed 4-3 entering the third period, but managed to escape early in the period and followed with a pair of takedowns and a stalling point to record the win.
Seth Gross, ranked seventh at 133 pounds, improved to 7-0 on the season with another dominating performance. The sophomore from Apple Valley, Minnesota, shut out Hawkeye backup Phillip Laux, 15-0, for his fourth win technical fall so far during the 2016-17 season.
The Jackrabbits return to dual action Sunday at the South Dakota Showcase at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls. Action begins at noon with SDSU taking on Northern State, Dakota Wesleyan and Augustana. Another group of Jackrabbit wrestlers is scheduled to compete Saturday at the UNI Open in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
