During her hosting duties at the 2019 GRAMMY Awards, the 38-year-old singer took the stage to recall one of her fondest GRAMMY memories. In 2005, both Keys and Mayer were up for Song of the Year; Keys for “If I Ain’t Got You” and Mayer for “Daughters.”
When Stevie Wonder walked out to present the award, Keys was sure she had it in the bag.
“When my hero, Stevie Wonder, opened up that card and started to read in braille, I just knew he was gonna feel my name. My name,” she exclaimed, before the clip of Wonder reading the card began to play, announcing that it was actually Mayer who came out victorious.
“I ain’t got that GRAMMY,” she jokingly sang once the clip ended. She went on to assure her fans that “this story has a really happy ending.”
“John said, ‘I agree, Alicia. This should’ve been yours,'” she recalled. “And he literally broke the GRAMMY and wrote ‘If I Ain’t Got You’ with my name on it and gave it to me. Like, look at what he did! Look! And this is my half of my GRAMMY. This is my HAMMY!”
As Keys finished showing off her half of the GRAMMY — the gold gramophone — Mayer, 41, walked onto the stage with his half of the award, the black stand with the plaque featuring his name and song.
“This has got to be the coolest joint custody agreement in showbiz history,” he quipped, following a sweet hug from Keys.
The “New Light” singer went on to put the two pieces of the GRAMMY back together, telling the audience it would remain that way “just for one night only.”
No need to feel too bad for Keys, though! She went on to win four R&B awards at the 2005 GRAMMYs, including Song, Vocals, Duo or Group Performance and Album. Meanwhile Mayer won two that year, Song of the Year and Best Male Pop Performance, both for “Daughters.”
Despite the GRAMMY not being whole anymore, fans can still look back at it in its shining glory, with pics from when Mayer accepted the award about 14 years ago.
Though they didn’t pose together at the 2005 ceremony, they did take a pic the night prior at Clive Davis’ pre-GRAMMYs party. In the shot, they smiled next to actor Kevin Bacon and producer Kerry Brothers.
