Setback for French teams

VakifBank Istanbul took impressive advantage over RC Cannes, leader of Group E before Christmas break. Despite their setback in front of a packed Palais des Sports, Ravva & Co. are still a strong candidate for Playoffs 12.

The game started well for French players as Turks took a few moments to get accustomed on serve. As soon problem was solved, they ruled out any chance for Cannes to come back in the game and soon delivered the first European loss for the French champions. Stormed out in the first act (11-25), Yan Fang’s players showed up a better resistance in the second set (22-25), only to be swept away by the Turkish armada in straight sets. Icon player, Victoria Ravva, accepted the heavy los: We knew we are not leaving with first chance this time. We realized that our victory in Istanbul was a tremendous performance (…) They did an amazing game, while we knew it was going to be extremely hard tonight, they’re undoubtedly one of the best European teams. Unfortunately we couldn’t play our best volleyball today, therefore we couldn’t fight back.

Fenerbahce cruised over Nantes checking the fourth consecutive victory in CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League – Women. Unbeaten Yellow Angels never gave rookies from Nantes any chance to level up the game.  Poor scoring stats for the French team overpowered by great block-defense system on the Turkish side. Ariel Turner managed to score only seven times, while Kim Yeon-Koung (best scorer with 12 winning spikes), Madelaynne Montano and Lucia Bosseti, amazingly served by Eleonora Lo Bianco, led the team to a straight sets’ victory. Wednesday’s loss sentences Nantes to an imperious victory next week against Romanian champions, Stiinta Bacau to boost up chances to making it to Playoffs.

One French team managed to keep up their fans expectations, the Angels of Béziers, who scored a straight sets away victory, against the Spanish ‘armada’ of Naturhouse Ciudad de Logroño. With Bojana Markovic and captain Hélène Schleck in great shape (15 winning points, respectively 13), Angels are taking a good option to next phase of CEV Cup Women.
