MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University wrestling team held its first official practice in preparation of the 2013-14 season on Thursday.
Jesse Nelson enters his seventh season at the helm of the Mustangs. Nelson will welcome a talented and experienced 30-man roster, which is highlighted by four returning NCAA DII national qualifiers – Jacob Begin, Kyle Begin, Travis Peralta and Justin Reinsma.
Reinsma earned All-America honors at 133 pounds for the second consecutive season as the junior earned a seventh place finish. Reinsma became just the second two-time NCAA All-American in program history, joining Link Steffen, who earned All-American honors in both 1997 and 1998. Reinsma will begin the season 12th on SMSU’s all-time win list with 79 bout victories.
Back for their junior and sophomore seasons are the Begin Brothers, Jacob and Kyle. Both earned their first career berths to the NCAA national tournament last year and are poised for another big year. Jacob went 17-5 last season at 165 pounds with seven pins and four major decisions, while younger brother Kyle went 19-4 with 11 pins at 165 and 174 pounds.
Travis Peralta rounds out the national tournament qualifiers as he returns for his senior season. Peralta went 18-13 at 184 pounds in 2012-13 for the Mustangs.
Other key contributors that return are Beau Buysse (141 lbs.), Ethan Hildebrandt (141 lbs.), Codie Lane (157 lbs.), and Micah Larson (197 lbs.).
SMSU finished fifth in the 2012-13 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference standings with its 13-6, 3-5 NSIC record.
